Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has given football fans hope of being allowed back to watch their teams live at the start of the new season.
Expected to start again in September, Swindon Town fans will be looking forward to seeing the Robins take their place in League One after winning the 2019/20 League Two title, albeit in a prematurely ended season. (They would have won it anyway!)
Speaking at the Downing Street daily press conference Mr Dowden said: “I would really hope that by the return of the new season we might be in a position whereby some fans could start to return to stadiums.
“And I know that would be another important part of restoring the financial position of clubs.”
“I understand the need for all of these venues to return with people in them and, indeed, eventually without social distancing.
“But that can only be done if the public health allows it to happen.
“In relation to stadiums where people are outside and they are much bigger and there is more scope for social distancing, it may be that you could do that sooner.”
