Swindon Thief Jailed for Bank Card Fraud and Motor Vehicle Thefts

A prolific thief has been jailed for eight-and-a-half months after stealing bank cards and other items from vehicles, later using the stolen cards to commit fraud across Swindon.

Michael McDonagh, 46, of no fixed abode, appeared at Swindon Magistrates’ Court yesterday (26th November), where he pleaded guilty to two counts of theft from a motor vehicle and three counts of fraud by false representation. He was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison.

McDonagh’s arrest followed a series of thefts, including one on 24th November in Swindon town centre and another on 13th November on Cricklade Road. During a routine patrol on 25th November, officers detained McDonagh in the town centre. Further investigation linked him to the fraudulent use of stolen bank cards at the Applegreen Petrol Station on Great Western Way.

Speaking about the case, PC Paul Bezzant said: “McDonagh is a prolific offender, and I’m pleased he now faces time behind bars for his crimes. However, it’s important to remind people that these incidents were preventable. Vehicles were left unsecured, making them easy targets for theft.”

PC Bezzant issued a warning to vehicle owners, especially during the festive season, to remain vigilant: “Always lock your vehicle, even if you’re only stepping away for a moment. Thieves can act in seconds. Don’t leave valuables like laptops, phones, handbags, or Christmas presents on display. If unavoidable, ensure items are stored out of sight, such as in the boot, and make certain the car is locked and secure.”

He also advised drivers to remove satnavs, clean suction marks from windows, and ensure all windows, doors, and sunroofs are properly closed to deter opportunistic criminals.
