Lydiard Park Academy’s recent Careers and Futures Fair attracted some 600 enthusiastic students from various year groups.
Breaking from its usual evening slot and taking place during school hours, this shift allowed students full access to local employers, universities, and training providers—all while still in school. With participation from dozens of local employers, the event offered an up-close look at careers across sectors like IT, finance, the automotive industry, healthcare, the armed forces, and construction.
Mark Godley, Careers and Futures Lead at Lydiard Park Academy, reflected on the event’s success, saying, “Our Careers and Futures Fair gives students a valuable chance to explore future career paths, speak with industry professionals, and get a better understanding of the skills needed in a range of fields. This exposure is critical in helping them make decisions about their future. Moving the event to the school day had such a positive effect, and it’s clear this change will become a permanent fixture.”
Months of planning went into organising the event, with exhibitors attending to showcase potential futures and inspire pupils’ aspirations. Many local employers came eager to connect with students, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, with pupils leaving with a greater sense of clarity and ambition about their options.
Emma Newton, Talent Engagement Specialist from the Dick Lovett Group, spoke highly of the event’s organisation and engagement, saying, “Lydiard Park is a wonderful school to work with at careers events. The students truly value the chance to talk with employers, which makes for a really productive atmosphere. It was great to connect with students interested in apprenticeships, and to show off what the automotive industry has to offer!”
The fair’s positive reception among students was evident in their feedback. Year 13 student Henry commented, “It was a brilliant insight into future opportunities. I feel more confident moving forward when applying for my next steps after sixth form.”
Year 11 pupil Darcy shared, “It was useful to learn about what employers are looking for and to see a mix of businesses, colleges, and universities. I have a clearer sense of what I need to do to pursue my ambitions.”
From Year 10, Olive added, “The careers event was fantastic. It opened my mind to all the routes I can take, and I found it really useful.”
For many, this daytime event was a memorable opportunity to ask questions, seek out work experience, and engage with professionals in a range of fields—some for the very first time. Judging by the resounding success, Lydiard Park Academy’s innovative timing shift looks set to become a staple in the school calendar, giving future generations even more accessible opportunities to plan their pathways.
