Swindon has taken centre stage at a recent House of Lords showcase – and early signs suggest the event could be the catalyst for significant investment in the town’s future.
At a meeting held on Sunday 14th April, Swindon Borough Council updated members of the Build a Better Swindon Policy Development and Scrutiny Committee on the growing investor interest sparked by a Westminster summit held last month.
The event, hosted by Lord Michael Wills, attracted over 170 influential guests including national investors, key government agencies, cultural institutions, and education leaders. It served as a platform to promote the borough’s ambitious ‘Heart of Swindon’ vision and the broader potential of a town that’s already growing faster than the national average.
Representatives from Homes England, The Department for Transport, The Department for Business & Trade, Network Rail, and the Government Property Agency were among those in attendance. Notably, more than 50 national regeneration and housing investors also took part, signalling real appetite to explore what Swindon has to offer.
Councillors were told that conversations and follow-up meetings are already taking place with potential backers. Discussions are focusing on key development areas, including town centre projects and future housing growth.
To keep the momentum going, the Council is currently preparing an investment prospectus that will outline the opportunities available. This includes both shovel-ready schemes and long-term development sites. It’s estimated that up to 8,000 new homes could be delivered as part of the town’s next chapter, along with new amenities and infrastructure to support continued population growth.
Speaking about the summit’s success, Council Leader Cllr Jim Robbins said:
“The positivity generated from the House of Lords event was great to see and I’ve been really encouraged by the feedback and conversations we’ve been having over the last few weeks.
“I don’t need any encouragement to talk up our great town, but it was really pleasing that partners from the private sector were only too happy to explain why Swindon is the place to invest their money.
The word is definitely out that Swindon is a pro-growth, can-do town that has untapped potential and we need to build on that by working with investors and developers to deliver exciting projects for the town centre and beyond.”
It’s clear Swindon’s star is rising – and for investors looking for a location with ambition, connectivity, and a forward-thinking strategy, the town is now firmly on the radar.
