Having been a doyen of Rugby League in Swindon since the introduction of the sport to the town in the 1980s, Rod Evans finally achieved international status last weekend when appearing for Wales in an Rugby League Masters Festival at York.
The event, the largest ever international Festival of Masters Rugby League staged, to coincide with the Rugby League World Cup currently running across three platforms – men’s, women’s and wheelchair – celebrated the Masters format of the game and, along with Wales and hosts England, featured teams representing Australia, Canada, France and Ireland.

Evans himself was absolutely delighted to be selected, saying ‘Having played for Swindon against Cardiff Blue Dragons a couple of times recently.
“I was surprised but extremely honoured and proud to be called up for my country,” a sentiment shared by St George legend Richard White: “we are all very proud of Rod here at Swindon St George and are delighted to acknowledge him as our club’s very first international player” he beamed,
“He has been a massive driving force for us, particularly for our Masters section, and this honour is extremely well deserved.”
Wales started their day with a great game with Australia who were fresh from their game with England.
The Welsh followed this with a fascinating game with Ireland.
