With summer fast approaching, Swindon is gearing up for one of its most heartfelt community gatherings — Armed Forces Day, which this year holds even deeper significance as the nation marks 80 years since the end of the Second World War.
Scheduled for Saturday, 28 June at the ever-popular Lydiard Park, the event promises a day packed with community spirit, live entertainment, and meaningful tributes. Running from 11am to 4pm, it’s expected to draw large crowds from across Swindon and beyond, all keen to pay their respects and enjoy a day out in the sunshine.
Organised by Swindon Borough Council, the free event will bring together local Armed Forces units, community groups, and volunteers in what will serve as the culmination of a national week of recognition for those who have served — and continue to serve — in the military.
Visitors can look forward to a broad range of attractions throughout the day. Among the highlights are a family funfair, performances from local dance troupes, military vehicles, and a challenging assault course for adventurous guests. The Wiltshire Army Cadet Force and the Swindon and Royal Wootton Bassett Sea Cadets will also be in attendance, joined by local Scout and Brownie groups.
As part of the commemoration, a tree planting ceremony will take place in the country park to honour those who gave so much in defence of our freedoms. The day will also include a mini-concert, stalls from charities such as Help for Heroes, the NSPCC, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Swindon & Wiltshire Pride, plus local food vendors and craft traders showcasing their talents.
Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, described it as,
“A wonderful occasion to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many, while also celebrating the sense of community and freedom their service helped preserve. With entertainment for all ages and a strong local presence, I’d encourage everyone to come along if they can.”
Councillor Junab Ali, the Council’s Member Champion for the Armed Forces, added:
“This event is only possible thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, community groups, and the brilliant Armed Forces Day committee. It’s important we continue to show our gratitude and keep these traditions alive.”
Major Luke Bowdidge of B Company 7 RIFLES shared his pride in attending, stating:
“It’s a real honour to stand alongside veterans and community groups for such a historic occasion. We’re grateful to the Council for stepping in to host this year and look forward to a memorable day.”
The event offers free on-site parking, making it easy for families and visitors of all ages to attend.
