Swindon Residents Urged Not to Ignore the Silent Threat of Type 2 Diabetes

A new health warning is being sounded across Swindon as research reveals a worrying lack of awareness about the dangers of type 2 diabetes among local adults.

Despite being a serious condition that can lead to life-altering complications—including sight loss, heart attacks and strokes—a staggering 61% of residents surveyed admitted they had never even considered their own risk of developing it.

The findings come from a recent joint survey by Tesco and Diabetes UK, who are now ramping up efforts to ensure that Swindonians are better informed, supported, and equipped to reduce their risk.

At the heart of the campaign is a simple but powerful message: type 2 diabetes is often preventable, or at the very least, manageable. Yet many people may be living with the condition unknowingly, due to the subtlety of its early symptoms.

To help tackle the issue locally, Tesco Extra on Ocotal Way in Swindon is now offering in-store support through its pharmacy. Specially trained staff are available to chat with customers about medication, dietary concerns, or simply to answer any questions they may have about diabetes.

According to Douglas Twenefour, Head of Clinical at Diabetes UK:

“With one in five UK adults now living with diabetes or prediabetes, knowing your personal risk has never been more important. The good news is that with the right support, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed—and even put into remission in some cases.”

Diabetes UK is also encouraging people to complete their free online ‘Know Your Risk’ tool, which helps users understand their likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, along with steps to lower it. You can access the tool at: https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/c/start

It’s not just about warnings though. Tesco and Diabetes UK have worked together to create healthy, budget-friendly meal planners, offering easy recipes for those either living with or worried about diabetes. These meal plans include healthier takes on British favourites, giving families the chance to eat well without breaking the bank.

With recent figures showing that 35% of all enquiries to the Diabetes UK Helpline in 2024 were about eating well and physical activity, it’s clear that diet and lifestyle support remains a major concern.

Jonathan Bridgett, Pharmacy Services Manager at Tesco, added: “We’re proud to continue our partnership with Diabetes UK and provide accessible, practical advice to our customers. With the right knowledge and support, people can make meaningful changes to their health.”

So, whether you’re already living with diabetes, worried about your risk, or simply want to better understand how food and lifestyle can affect your wellbeing, the tools and guidance are now available—right on your doorstep.
