Swindon’s town centre is a step closer to a radical transformation following a fresh injection of funding that’s set to breathe new life into the area surrounding the railway station.
The ambitious project, known as Swindon Knowledge Central, will see over 100 acres of brownfield land next to the railway repurposed into a vibrant commercial and residential district, bringing thousands of jobs and hundreds of new homes to the town.
Earlier this year, Swindon Borough Council secured £100,000 from Homes England to begin work on a design for a new northern entrance to Swindon station. This new entrance is part of a broader vision that includes the construction of a multi-storey car park to replace the current north-side surface car parks. By freeing up these areas on the south side of the tracks, the Council aims to create additional space for vital development.
Now, in a welcome move, a further £175,000 has been awarded through the national One Public Estate (OPE) programme. This funding will support the creation of a detailed master plan for the area, as well as further design work and a robust business case to unlock future investment streams.
The OPE scheme, run jointly by the Office of Government Property and the Local Government Association, backs local authorities working in partnership with public sector bodies to deliver transformative property-focused projects.
Swindon Borough Council will be working alongside a broad range of strategic partners including Network Rail, GWR, Homes England, the Department for Business and Trade, UK Research and Innovation, and Business West.
The Swindon Knowledge Central strategic board—tasked with overseeing the scheme—will reconvene next Wednesday (18 June), with plans also under way to establish a development company to push the project forward.
Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, described the project as the most significant regeneration scheme the Borough has seen in decades.
He said:
“Swindon Knowledge Central is central to our long-term vision for the Heart of Swindon. It brings the opportunity to create high-quality new homes and jobs, attract inward investment, and reimagine underused land right in the centre of our town.”
“This latest funding will allow us to push ahead with key design work and lay the groundwork for further investment. We’re assembling all the necessary parts to ensure this becomes a landmark development that benefits the people of Swindon for generations to come.”
With the groundwork now laid, residents and businesses will be watching with anticipation as the regeneration of this key area begins to take shape—promising a new era for Swindon’s town centre.
