At 69 years old, most people might consider putting their feet up. But George Kennedy had other ideas.
The retired civil engineer from Swindon took on a 70K in May challenge in support of Christian Aid Week 2025. George, who served as treasurer of the Swindon Christian Aid Group, committed to running 10 kilometres a day during the week – completing a full 70 kilometres to reflect both his forthcoming 70th birthday and the daily struggles of people around the world who walk long distances for essentials like clean water and market access.
Starting his runs at 6.40am to avoid the rising temperatures, George clocked up 41km by midweek alone. He said: “Every year, during Christian Aid Week, people across Britain and Ireland raise funds, act, and pray for their global neighbours. It’s a celebration of hope and a fairer world.
“I run regularly and wanted to use that to support the 70K in May challenge. It was my way of standing in solidarity with communities who face daily hardship.”
George’s determination captured hearts locally and beyond, with donations surpassing £1,400. The money raised is supporting Christian Aid’s international partners in their work helping vulnerable communities find sustainable solutions to poverty.
Christian Aid Week 2025, which ran from 11th to 17th May, focussed on Guatemala – a Central American country experiencing the brutal impact of climate change. Extreme and erratic weather has left farmers facing droughts, flooding, and failed harvests. These challenges have put millions at risk of hunger.
Christian Aid, alongside partner organisation Coordinación de ONG y Cooperativas (CONGCOOP), has been helping local families adapt. From training on growing more resilient crops to constructing water recycling systems from household materials and creating organic fertiliser, communities are finding new ways to survive. The work also includes supporting farmers in selling their produce and protecting their land from industrial takeovers.
George’s early morning efforts may have seemed solitary, but his strides carried a powerful message: that with compassion and action, change is possible – one step at a time.
