Tesco stores throughout Swindon and the rest of the UK are to unlock its trolleys after failing to convert them to take the new 12-sided £1 coin.
Hundreds of thousands of trolleys across 2,500 stores will have their locking systems disabled until Tesco arrange to have them adapted to accept the new coins.
A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We’re replacing the locks on our trolleys to accept old and new pound coins as well as existing trolley tokens.
“As an interim measure we will unlock trolleys while this process is completed and we will continue to have colleagues on hand to attend trolleys in our stores, so our customers aren’t affected by the changes.”
It is understood all other supermarkets throughout the town have had their trolleys converted in time.
The old pound coin will cease to be legal tender on October 15th and any coins left in the bottom of your purse will need to be exchanged at the bank.
