Swindon Storm Score Big as NFL Legend Rob Gronkowski Announces Major Funding Boost

Swindon’s grassroots American football team, Swindon Storm, had a better Super Bowl evening than Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes when NFL icon and ex New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski interrupted the live coverage to deliver some game-changing news.

As members of Swindon Storm gathered at Route 66 Sports Bar in Old Town to watch the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles, their broadcast was suddenly interrupted. But rather than a technical glitch, they found themselves face-to-face with four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski.

“Hi Swindon! Rob Gronkowski here,” he said. “Sorry to interrupt your Super Bowl Sunday, but I have a special message for everyone at Swindon Storm watching from Route 66 tonight.”

The team has been awarded a share of £400,000 through the Cash4Clubs programme funded by Flutter, providing a much-needed boost to support the sport in the local community.

“Best of luck in the BAFA league. And remember: You are the Storm!” he added, rounding off the unexpected but thrilling announcement.

The £2,000 grant is set to make a real difference, particularly in funding essential protective equipment such as pads for new players. With American football on the rise in the UK, securing financial backing like this ensures clubs can continue to grow and provide opportunities for those wanting to take up the sport.

Coach Andy Wilson described the funding as “transformational,” saying it will help remove barriers for new players by providing the kit they need to safely get started.

Cash4Clubs, which has been running for nearly 20 years, focuses on supporting clubs in areas where access to funding can be limited. Last year, 85% of recipients reported they were able to increase participation and deliver more health and fitness activities as a direct result of the funding.
