Around one in ten of the working population in Swindon will get their biggest ever pay rise on today as the minimum wage jumps by as much as £600 a year.
The jump in the Living Wage to £7.50 an hour from today will benefit 2.3 million workers throughout the UK according to The Low Pay Commission (LPC).
LPC said hourly pay for the lowest paid was at its highest ever level and is still on track to reach the target of £9 an hour by 2020 as set out by Chancellor George Osborne in the 2015 Budget.
16- to 17 year olds will receive a 2.8 per cent riseto £4.05 an hour
18- to 20 year olds will receive a 3.1 per cent rise to £5.60 an hour
21- to 24 year olds will receive a 3.2 per cent rise to £7.05 an hour
25 and overs will receive a 4.2 per cent jump to £7.50 an hour
When introduced back in 1999 the minimum wage was just £3.60 an hour!
