Marks & Spencer today updated its five-year store programme, implemented to improve its UK stores ensuring they continue to meet the changing needs of its customers.
Despite announcing the creation of 1,400 new jobs across 34 new food stores in the next six months the focus in the media seemed to centre on the announcement that six stores will also be closing.
Now put together store closures and the fact we have one of the outlets in Swindon Town Centre and out come the doom-mongers who are sure that everything Swindon is doomed and the M&S store in Swindon is going to close. Rumours even going as far as the Brunel Shopping Centre paying the rent to ensure M&S stay put.
A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer have today confirmed to The Swindonian that despite all of the rumours circulating, “there are no plans to close the Swindon Town Centre store.”
The M&S five-year store programme will see 200 new Food only locations open throughout the UK and 60 stores no longer stocking the clothing and home ranges.
The six stores currently under consultation for closure are:
Monks Cross (Simply Food store),
Portsmouth,
Slough,
Warrington,
Wokingham
Worksop (Simply Food store).
