The move from Apsley House in Old Town to the Civic Offices aims to make the council’s art and artefact collection more accessible to a wider audience. Renamed as Museum and Art Swindon, the institution is gearing up to enter a new phase of showcasing Swindon’s remarkable cultural heritage.

Upon completion, the Civic Offices will offer approximately 40% more exhibition space compared to its previous location, promising an enriched experience for visitors. The improved facilities will also cater to the needs of staff, volunteers, and researchers, with plans to revive the museum and art gallery’s volunteer program.

A dedicated space will be designated for educational purposes, serving as a learning hub for schools and families, while also doubling up as a venue for museum events. Concurrently, the launch of Museum and Art Swindon’s new website will provide detailed insights into the collections, opening hours, and upcoming events.

Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Cabinet Member for Heritage, Art, and Culture at Swindon Borough Council, expressed her excitement at the project’s nearing completion, acknowledging the dedication of the project team in overcoming challenges and bringing the vision to life.

Echoing the sentiment, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, praised Swindon’s commitment to its cultural legacy, citing the town’s reputation for taking art seriously.

Linda Kasmaty, Chair of the Friends of Museum and Art Swindon, hailed the progress as “fabulous,” commending the dedication of the team and expressing pride in Swindon’s forthcoming cultural landmark.
