Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis.
With its unique rules and accessible gameplay, Pickleball has gained popularity worldwide, captivating players of all ages and skill levels. In this article, we will delve into the exciting world of Pickleball, exploring its origins, rules, and the current availability of free taster sessions at Basset Down.
What is Pickleball?
Pickleball originated in the United States in the mid-1960s and has since evolved into a captivating sport enjoyed by millions. The sport is played on a court similar to a badminton court, with a modified tennis net dividing it in half. Players use solid paddles, typically made of composite materials, to hit a perforated polymer ball over the net.
Pickleball can be played in singles or doubles format, with the objective being to outscore opponents by hitting the ball over the net and into the designated opponent’s court. The game combines strategy, agility, and hand-eye coordination, making it both challenging and exhilarating.
Pickleball Rules and Gameplay
The rules of Pickleball are straightforward, making it easy for newcomers to pick up and enjoy. The game starts with an underhand serve, and the serving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it. After the initial serve, both teams can choose to volley the ball (hitting it before it bounces) or play it after it bounces. However, there are specific areas near the net called the “kitchen” or “non-volley zone” where players are not allowed to volley the ball.
Scoring in Pickleball follows a rally scoring system, where points are earned on every serve. The first team to reach 11 points, with a two-point lead, wins the game. Pickleball matches are typically played in a best-of-three games format.
