As we approach the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2024, the Swindon community, comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds, including around 350 Ukrainian visitors, contemplates a respectful and sensitive commemoration.
In an effort to unite the community and honour this unwelcome anniversary, two significant local organisations, each embodying the best of Swindon, have come together – The Swindon Concert Band and The Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership.

The Swindon Concert Band stands as one of the region’s premier symphonic wind bands, having been established in 1971. Drawing members of all ages from the local area, the band not only boasts a vibrant concert programme but has also achieved success at the National Concert Band Festival.
Music Director Malcolm Webb expressed the band’s commitment to supporting local charities and contributing to the community. He shared that members of the band, in collaboration with locally based Ukrainians, felt compelled to mark the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The band is proud to align with The Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership, aiming to raise funds for their vital humanitarian work.
Reflecting on the link between the band and SHAP, Louise Rhoades, the lead flautist, highlighted the connection forged through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Hosting SHAP Board member Zoreslava Lavrentyeva and her teenage son Denys, Louise emphasized how this experience had unexpectedly turned into an uplifting and inspiring journey.
Zoreslava expressed her gratitude for the support received, acknowledging the enduring friendships formed with remarkable individuals in the community saying “I am grateful for the unparalleled efforts of so many wonderful people who have propelled our collective momentum. The bonds forged with individuals like Carol, Sarah, Kelly, Natalya, Elena, Iryna, Alla and Mike are, in my belief, enduring friendships that will withstand the test of time.”
She shared her belief in the lasting impact of these connections and the importance of every contribution in securing a peaceful future for Ukraine.
Louise, reciprocating the warmth and positivity, spoke of the joy of hosting a Ukrainian family and the unexpected uplifting experience it turned out to be.
“Whilst we welcomed the opportunity to host a Ukrainian family, we had little idea of how much of an uplifting experience it would turn out to be” she said.
“Despite the challenges of settling in the UK and ongoing concerns of family still in Ukraine, Zoria has always been amazingly positive, embracing the local community and the opportunity to support her beloved Ukraine by volunteering at SHAP. She and Denys quickly became an integral part of our family and are an inspiration to us all.”
Mike Bowden, Chair of SHAP, expressed gratitude to Malcolm and the Swindon Concert Band for their support whilst saying “it’s impossible to imagine what our Ukrainian friends are going through as their country, just a short flight from London, is ravaged by war. They are such determined resilient people and it’s a privilege to do what we can to support them.
“Join us at Christ Church Swindon on the 24th February to stand together in solidarity with Ukraine, supported by the harmonious melodies of the Swindon Concert Band. Let the music speak volumes, echoing the strength of community and the unwavering spirit of the Ukrainian people.”
