Local pride and reflection were in abundance this week as Swindon Borough Council marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a poignant flag-raising ceremony outside the Civic Offices.
The event, held on Wednesday 8th May, paid tribute to the soldiers and civilians who sacrificed so much during the Second World War, ensuring the liberties many enjoy today.

The commemorations were supported by local Brownie and Scout groups, who turned out in full uniform to honour the occasion alongside councillors, council staff, and members of the public.
Swindon Mayor Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh, Council Leader Councillor Jim Robbins, and Chief Executive Samantha Mowbray led the proceedings, which included speeches, hymns, and the ceremonial raising of the Union Flag.
Councillor Robbins said: “I am really grateful to all of the residents and colleagues who joined us today outside the Civic Offices to mark this significant VE Day anniversary. It is important that we continue to acknowledge the sacrifices that helped secure the freedom we enjoy today. As we’ve seen throughout this week, their spirit continues to live on in Swindon.”
