Swindon Man Jailed for Vicious Domestic Abuse and Assaults on Police

A Swindon man has been jailed for a series of disturbing offences, including domestic abuse and assaults on police officers.

Claudio Stroud, 23, of Tennyson Street, was sentenced to four years and six months in prison after being convicted at Swindon Crown Court for a range of crimes against his ex-partner. These included controlling and coercive behaviour, threats to kill, assault causing actual bodily harm, and threatening with an offensive weapon.

In March 2023, Stroud attacked the victim, a woman in her 20s, on multiple occasions. The assaults included strangulation attempts and holding a knife to her neck, during which he threatened to kill her. On March 23, police arrested Stroud after the victim reported the abuse. While resisting arrest, Stroud assaulted two officers, fracturing one officer’s finger and spraining the wrist of another.

Stroud was already on licence from prison for similar offences against a previous victim and was immediately recalled. During the trial, critical evidence from the victim and her family, along with recordings, photos, and abusive messages, helped secure his conviction despite his not-guilty plea.

In addition to the prison term, Stroud will serve two years on extended licence and is subject to a 10-year restraining order to protect the victim.

Complex crime investigator Catherine Baird praised the victim’s bravery: “I want to highlight the courage of the victim in this case. Without her testimony and impact statement, we could not have achieved this result. I hope her bravery inspires other victims to come forward, knowing they will be supported, and justice will be sought on their behalf.”

Baird added: “Stroud’s actions have caused deep harm to the victim. This sentence and restraining order will hopefully allow her to begin rebuilding her life.”

Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of background. Support is available for those experiencing abuse, even if they are not ready to contact police. Organisations like Paragon and FearFree provide confidential help.
