A Swindon man has been handed a prison sentence of over three years following a violent assault in which he attacked a victim with a crowbar.
Matthew “Matty” Brown, aged 37, of Ermin Street, Stratton St Margaret, appeared at Swindon Crown Court earlier today (Monday, 16th December). He pleaded guilty to Section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) and received a sentence of three years and 10 months in prison.
The case stemmed from an incident on 9th May, when Brown forced his way into a property on Sandgate, Swindon. Armed with a crowbar, he struck a man multiple times over the head and shoulders. The victim, who was known to Brown, suffered significant injuries but managed to escape the attack before it escalated further.
Detective Constable James Pugh, who was involved in the investigation, commented:
“This was a premeditated act of violence where Brown broke into the victim’s home, armed with a metal weapon, and launched a vicious and unprovoked attack upon him. Thankfully, the victim managed to escape the ordeal and prevent further harm to himself.
“The swift response of our officers, coupled with the invaluable assistance of members of the public, was instrumental in identifying and arresting Brown swiftly. Their dedication and commitment to justice have been essential in securing this guilty plea.
“We want to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident, targeted at a specific individual, and there is no ongoing threat to the wider community.
“We hope this outcome provides some sense of closure to the victim and their family. Our thoughts remain with them as they continue their recovery.”
