Unemployed people in Swindon are being urged to take advantage of a railcard that gives them half-price train and bus travel to get to job interviews far and wide.
Launched in 2011, the Job Centre Plus Travel Discount Card knocks 50 per cent off the price of train travel for those looking to find work.
All train operators in Britain offer the 50% discount for jobseekers who have the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card, which job centres can give to those claiming jobseeker’s allowance or universal credit for 13-39 weeks (18-24-year-olds) or 13-52 weeks (25 and over).
Paul Plummer, the chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group, which brings together train companies and Network Rail, said: “Getting more people into work is part of our long-term plan to support and strengthen communities. The partnership railway is committed to spreading economic prosperity across the country.
“Over half a million discounted journeys were made in the last year but we want to make sure that everyone who is entitled to discounted journeys, in all parts of the country, knows about the discounts available.”
A Jobcentre Plus travel Discount card is free and lasts up to three months. The card allows the bearer to get the following standard class tickets at discounted rates:
- 50% Off Anytime Day and Off-Peak Day tickets (including Off-Peak Day Travelcards for travel starting outside London Zones 1-9). Also Weekly, Monthly and longer period Season Tickets and Travelcards (up to a maximum of 3 months)
- 50% off Oyster pay as you go (PAYG) fares in London Zones 1-6
Reduced rate tickets booked with the Jobcentre Plus Travel Discount Card cannot be used to travel in first class and are not valid for travel on Southeastern High Speed rail services.
