In a heartwarming initiative to bring joy and inspiration to young children in war-torn Ukraine, the Swindon Humanitarian Aid Partnership (SHAP) has unveiled The Children’s Story Bus.
This creative project, supported by generous donations from the Go-Ahead Group, aims to provide a safe and colourful space for children to play, learn, and find moments of happiness amid challenging circumstances.

SHAP, renowned for its support to locally based Ukrainians who have fled their homeland, has delivered nearly 2000 tonnes of aid to those affected by the conflict. Seeking to extend their support to the youngest victims of the crisis, SHAP conceptualised The Children’s Story Bus.
The Go-Ahead Group, a steadfast supporter of SHAP, donated seven buses for use in Ukraine. Go-East Anglia, responsible for local bus and school services across Norfolk, Essex, and Suffolk, actively participated in the initiative by providing a single-decker bus, which, although mechanically sound, had reached the end of its regular service life. The transformation of the bus began in Swindon, symbolising the collaborative effort to create a positive impact.

Davina Langley, Head of Commercial and Marketing at Go-East Anglia, shared the enthusiasm behind their involvement, stating, “Our buses play a vital part in bringing communities together, so we were keen to get involved in a project to provide a safe space to support the communities of Ukraine.
“We are very proud to be part of this wonderful project and hope many children in Ukraine will spend many happy hours playing on the bus.”
At the heart of The Children’s Story Bus is a captivating mural designed and painted by local artist Billy Beaumont. Billy, inspired by SHAP’s work and the resilience of the locally based Ukrainians, incorporated iconic images from both Britain and Ukraine into the mural, creating a colourful and thought-provoking play area for the children.
Billy expressed his commitment to giving back to those in need, saying, “I hope the bus spends many months touring Ukraine, helping to inspire the healthy imagination of children, a safe and colourful space to create and learn.”

SHAP Chair Mike Bowden expressed gratitude to all involved in the transformation, highlighting the contributions of volunteers, Go-East Anglia, and especially Billy for creating something magical for the children of Ukraine.
The Children’s Story Bus is set to tour Western Ukraine, providing children with a space to explore their creativity and imagination, bringing a glimmer of joy to their lives amidst challenging circumstances.
In addition to this initiative, SHAP has exciting plans in the pipeline, with a concert featuring the Swindon Concert Band scheduled for Saturday, 24th February, at Christ Church, Old Town, marking the second anniversary of the Russian invasion.
Tickets for the concert are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/swindon-concert-band or tickets@swindonconcertband.co.uk, as well as from band members.
