A vital affordable housing initiative in Swindon has clinched a prestigious award at the LABC (Local Authority Building Control) West of England Building Excellence awards.

Ben Robinson, representing R & R Design and Build, secured the title of “Best Residential and Small Commercial Builder,” while Darren Cawkwell from Hills Homes Developments Ltd was celebrated as the “Construction Specialist of the Year.” Michael Kord, associated with Hills Home Ltd, was honoured with the “Best Residential Site Manager” award.

Further adorning Swindon’s accolades, Zurich’s state-of-the-art Grade A office complex, Unity Place, adjacent to Fleming Way and owned by the Council, received the distinction of “Best Non-residential New Build.” Additionally, Kenneth and Edwards Ltd were recognised as the top contributors in the category of “Best Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team” for their collaborative work with Swindon Borough Council.

The Queens Drive regeneration project, designed by Quattro Design Architects, is entering its final phase after the initial build of 32 flats and 15 houses on the site once occupied by the George Gay Gardens residential block. Willmott Dixon, the Council’s appointed building contractor, is nearing completion of the remaining 68 new apartments and 34 houses.

At Queens Drive, the structures have been designed to pay homage to Swindon’s rich railway heritage. The gable ends of the buildings are inspired by the dimensions of the former engine sheds in the town’s historic railway works.

As well as increasing the number of affordable homes in Swindon, the development will act as a gateway to the town, providing a more welcoming drive into the town centre.

Councillor Janine Howarth, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “It is fantastic to win any award, but I am particularly proud the Council, together with the building contractor and design team, has been recognised for this regional award as it is a reflection of all the hard work our officers have put in to making this significant affordable housing scheme a reality.

“This development has transformed this part of Queens Drive and the climate-friendly measures, the fact the properties are affordable and the excellent build quality mean they fulfil all three of the Council’s Missions to Build a Better Swindon, Combat Inequality and Achieve Net Zero.

“It is great Swindon’s construction industry was once again so well represented among the winning entries and I wish them all the very best of luck for the grand finals taking place in January.”
