Big Breakfast Plus, a Swindon-based charity, has been recognised for its exceptional service to the local community with the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
The award, which is regarded as the voluntary sector’s equivalent of an MBE, was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Dame Sarah Troughton, on Friday, 7th March.

The charity, which provides freshly cooked breakfasts to those in need, was among a select group of organisations chosen for the honour, which was first announced in November 2024. The award acknowledges the tireless efforts and dedication of Big Breakfast Plus volunteers, who have already served more than 4,200 breakfasts in 2025 – averaging over 70 a day – and have collectively contributed more than 1,700 hours of service this year alone.
Speaking at the presentation, Dame Sarah praised the charity’s vital contribution to the community: “This award reflects the hard work and commitment of all the volunteers who ensure that a freshly cooked breakfast is available seven days a week for those who need it most. Starting the day with a warm meal and a chat can bring strength and hope to many vulnerable people.”
Representing Big Breakfast Plus at the event were two of the charity’s long-standing volunteers, Angela Proctor and Jim McLeod, who accepted the award on behalf of the organisation.
Angela, reflecting on the honour, said: “It’s a true recognition for Big Breakfast Plus to receive this award. Every shift brings something different, and knowing that people leave having eaten a freshly cooked breakfast – sometimes the only hot meal they’ll have that day – is a feeling like no other.”
Jim, who has volunteered with the charity for over a decade, added: “I’ve been part of Big Breakfast Plus for over 10 years, and every shift is rewarding. Being able to brighten someone’s day with a hot meal and a friendly face makes such a difference. The King’s Award is a wonderful acknowledgment of the hard work the volunteer team puts in every day.”
Big Breakfast Plus plays a crucial role in supporting some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in Swindon. Operating seven days a week, the charity relies on the generosity of the local community to continue providing its invaluable service. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service highlights not only the hard work of the volunteers but also the importance of the charity’s impact on the town.
