A Swindon charity is inviting people to walk across hot coals as part of a fundraising challenge aimed at supporting survivors of domestic abuse.
Society Without Abuse (SWA) has opened registrations for this year’s Firewalk, which will take place at Swindon Cricket Club on Friday, 23 October.
Participants will receive professional coaching before taking on a bed of hot coals reaching temperatures of up to 1,200°F, with the event designed to give people an opportunity to challenge themselves while raising money for SWA’s work.
Last year, 30 people took part and raised more than £14,000 for the charity.
Natasha Moyles, Operations Manager at SWA, said the event was intended to highlight the experiences of people who have escaped domestic abuse.
“The SWA Firewalk is such an empowering evening,” she said.
“Survivors of domestic abuse have walked through the metaphorical coals to escape the trauma they’ve experienced. By giving people a taste of the fear, determination and sense of achievement that they have gone through, we hope to bring conversations around domestic abuse out in the open.”
Money raised through the Firewalk will support SWA’s work helping people affected by domestic abuse, including support for those recovering from trauma and efforts to break cycles of abuse.
The charity also works with young people to help them recognise warning signs of unhealthy relationships and understand what they should expect from their own relationships.
The Firewalk is not just aimed at those taking part, with spectators and supporters also being encouraged to attend.
A Lego Walk will give spectators the chance to take on their own challenge in return for a small donation, while a Lego creative zone and games will provide activities for families.
