Over 200 children from Swindon have lent their imaginations to create a magical new tale, set to be revealed as part of this year’s Enchanted Gardens Light Trail.
Award-winning local author Kate Claxton, known for her engaging children’s books, partnered with South Swindon Parish Council to run storytelling workshops with pupils from three local schools and young members of community groups. Together, they have created The Winter Wish Tree, a story celebrating kindness and community, which will be displayed as an enchanting Story Walk around the Old Town Gardens.
Kate, based in North Swindon, explained, “I’ve experienced the thrill of having my books turned into Story Walks before, but this project gave us the chance to share new voices. Collaborating with groups like Swindon Young Carers, Wiltshire Treehouse, and We’re Open Families has been a beautiful way to spotlight the experiences of children who might often feel overlooked.”
The project invited participation from groups supporting some of Swindon’s most vulnerable young people. For instance, Wiltshire Treehouse, a charity helping bereaved children, brought creativity to life with a session where participants designed memory bears containing private messages to loved ones they had lost. These heartfelt contributions have been woven into the story’s illustrations, ensuring their voices resonate throughout the community.
Kath Brownlee from Wiltshire Treehouse said, “Bereaved children often feel isolated, but seeing their experiences reflected in a story for the whole town fosters connection and self-esteem. This opportunity to contribute creatively has been both healing and empowering.”
Children from Lethbridge, King William Street CE, and The Croft primary schools also added their touch by designing ‘wish’ panels, now set to feature in a light installation in the Rose Garden. This interactive display replaces the traditional lanterns, offering a new way for families to engage with the trail.
Kate’s workshops blended storytelling with creative activities, ensuring that the final story remained light and magical. “It’s been a joyful process,” she said. “I can’t wait to see the children’s faces when they spot their contributions on display and share this story with the wider community.”
The Story Walk of The Winter Wish Tree will be available throughout the day at Old Town Gardens, while the Enchanted Gardens Light Trail will illuminate the park from Friday 29th November until Tuesday 24th December.
