Storm Darragh Forces Cancellation of Prospect Hospice’s ‘Light up a Life’ Service

Prospect Hospice’s much-loved Light up a Life remembrance service, originally scheduled for Sunday, 8th December, has been cancelled due to the severe weather forecast brought by Storm Darragh. The decision was made to ensure the safety of attendees, staff, and volunteers, as strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected to disrupt outdoor events.

The Light up a Life service is a deeply meaningful occasion for the local community, providing a space to remember and honour loved ones who have passed away. Although the cancellation is disappointing, the hospice team is exploring alternative arrangements and will share updates through their website and social media platforms in due course.

In the meantime, the Book of Remembrance will be available for viewing at the hospice from Monday, 9th December. Visitors are encouraged to pay their respects and reflect quietly in this tranquil setting, with the book remaining accessible throughout the coming weeks and into 2025.

Jeremy Lune, CEO of Prospect Hospice, expressed his regret at the cancellation: “This was an incredibly difficult decision, as we know how much the Light up a Life service means to our community. However, the safety and well-being of everyone involved had to take precedence. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we navigate these unforeseen challenges.”

Although the in-person gathering cannot go ahead, the hospice is inviting everyone to light a candle at 4:30pm on Sunday in memory of their loved ones. Those wishing to participate are encouraged to share photos of their candles on social media using the hashtag #LightUpALife, fostering a virtual community of remembrance and support.

The hospice also extended its thoughts to all those affected by Storm Darragh, urging everyone to take care during the adverse weather.
