Stay Safe this Bonfire Night: Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue’s Essential Fireworks Guide

As Bonfire Night approaches, the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a timely reminder to the public: safety first. Each year, the tale of Guy Fawkes is commemorated across the UK with fireworks displays and roaring bonfires. However, the evening can take a dangerous turn if basic safety practices aren’t followed.

Vikki Thomas, Prevention Delivery Manager at Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, highlighted the need for caution. She said, “Fireworks have the potential to be a great social event enjoyed with friends and family. However, accidents involving fireworks and bonfires can be life changing and have a devastating impact on anyone involved. Therefore, we would really like people to take the time to act appropriately and safely.”

The Fire and Rescue Service urges both regular attendees and organisers of firework displays to keep themselves up-to-date with the latest guidance, as fire safety regulations are often updated. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue has shared a list of essential tips to ensure this Bonfire Night is memorable for the right reasons.

Your Holiday Starts Now

Top Tips for a Safe Bonfire Night:

  1. Plan Ahead: Make sure you plan your firework display with safety in mind and check local timings for setting off fireworks.
  2. Choose Safe Fireworks: Only buy fireworks marked with a CE or UKCA label. Keep them secure in a closed box, using one at a time.
  3. Follow Instructions: Always read the instructions on each firework, using a torch if needed to stay safe.
  4. Light Safely: Ignite fireworks at arm’s length using a taper, and maintain a safe distance.
  5. Mind Flames: Keep any open flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks to avoid accidental ignition.
  6. Avoid Risky Moves: Never return to a lit firework and avoid putting fireworks in your pocket or throwing them.
  7. Direct Rockets Away from Crowds: If using rockets, always direct them well away from spectators.
  8. Fuel the Bonfire Responsibly: Only use natural materials to start your bonfire—never add paraffin or petrol.
  9. Put Out the Fire Properly: Make sure your fire is fully extinguished and surroundings are secure before leaving.

For families with young children, the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service has prepared a library of child-friendly resources on fire safety. Parents can access these at the DWise Safety Stories and Activities Library to help teach young ones about safety in a fun and informative way.

Everyone is also encouraged to review the Fireworks Code, which is available on the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service website at www.dwfire.org.uk/fireworks.

Let’s keep Bonfire Night safe and enjoyable for all. With a few simple precautions, this can be a memorable occasion to enjoy with friends, family, and neighbours.
