Following a recent inspection by Ofsted, St Joseph’s Catholic College has successfully retained its ‘good’ rating, affirming its commitment to academic excellence.
The inspection, conducted over two days last month, scrutinised various aspects of the secondary school’s operations. Ofsted typically revisits schools judged ‘good’ every four years to ensure sustained performance at this level.
The inspection team delved into the curriculum, evaluating its delivery in lessons and students’ overall progress. Attention was devoted to assessing the standard of behaviour within classrooms and across the school premises. The quality of the school’s safeguarding measures was also thoroughly examined.
Beyond academics, inspectors explored the broader development of students. This included assessing enrichment opportunities, reading support, intervention programmes, the quality of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), and the guidance students receive regarding careers.
The Ofsted report acknowledged the pride of both pupils and staff in being part of St Joseph’s Catholic College, noting their welcoming attitude towards visitors. The inspectors affirmed that students feel safe and supported within the school environment. Additionally, they highlighted the school’s ambition for all pupils to excel academically and develop their individual characters.

The report emphasised the permeation of the school’s religious ethos throughout its activities, reinforcing its integral role in shaping its identity.
While commending the school’s overall performance, inspectors identified two areas for improvement. They noted occasional imprecision in teachers’ use of assessment and identified instances where the curriculum could be more effectively adapted to ensure all pupils securely grasp key content.
Jerry Giles, Principal, said: “The inspection was a positive and professional experience for us. It’s great that the inspection team wholeheartedly agreed that St Joseph’s continues to be a good school, and that they saw the pride shown by both staff and students.
“We are always working to improve the experience of all students even further, and the points that Ofsted has given us will help that process.”
Councillor Adorabelle Amaral-Shaikh, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “I’d like to say a huge ‘well done’ to the senior leadership team, staff, pupils and governors at St Joseph’s on their extremely positive Ofsted report.
“It is wonderful that the inspectors highlighted so many great aspects of the school and that their first comment focused on how proud students and staff are to be members of the St Joseph’s community.
“They should actually be proud of themselves for the part they play in making their school such a great place to learn and work. Keep up the good work!”
