This cherished Grade 2* listed building, nestled amidst the rapidly developing landscape of North Swindon, offers a serene retreat where history and community converge.
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to delve into the rich tapestry of the church’s past, guided by local experts who will be on hand to share fascinating stories. In addition to these engaging talks, the church will host a variety of family-friendly activities, games, and crafts, ensuring that guests of all ages can enjoy a memorable day out.
St Andrew’s Church dates back to the 13th century, although its current appearance owes much to the renovations carried out by the Victorian architect, William Butterfield, in the 1860s. The church is home to some exceptional examples of Victorian and 20th-century stained-glass windows, offering a glimpse into the artistic heritage of the period.
Despite the encroachment of modern housing estates, the church remains a peaceful oasis, surrounded by a spacious churchyard where generations of local families lie at rest.
Although St Andrew’s is a site of significant historical interest, it continues to serve as a vibrant worshipping community. Regular Sunday services are held at 10am, with additional gatherings taking place throughout the month. Further details about the church’s activities can be found on its website.
On the day of the event, doors will open at 10am with talks scheduled for 10.30am and 2.30pm. Complimentary tea, coffee, and cake will be available throughout the day, with a simple lunch offered between 12pm and 1.30pm. While donations to support the church are welcome, entry is free. Due to limited on-site parking, visitors are encouraged to walk or use public transport where possible. The church is conveniently located on Tadpole Lane, near Lyall Close and Abbey Caravan Park, with the Number 10 bus stopping nearby.
