The cost of car insurance in the UK has surged to an unprecedented “all-time high,” as motorists face the burden of paying 40% more in insurance premiums compared to the previous year, according to the latest data from Confused.com and Willis Tower Watson (WTW) car insurance price index.
On average, UK drivers are now spending £776 to insure their vehicles, a sharp increase from £222 just one year ago.
Younger drivers between the ages of 17 and 20 have borne the brunt of this surge, experiencing a staggering 60% rise in insurance prices, driving the average cost of a motor policy to a staggering £2414.
Steve Dukes, CEO at Confused.com, expressed concern over the significant price increases, emphasising the potential financial impact on many individuals. “The price increases we’re seeing are so significant that it’s going to cause real financial impact to many people. We know that there’s a lot of factors going into this, with inflation pushing up the cost of claims for insurers.”
Meanwhile, Tim Rourke, UK head of pricing, product, claims, and underwriting at WTW, shed light on the primary drivers behind the high levels of claims inflation. Rourke highlighted the sharp rise in used car prices, compounded by an increase in vehicle theft, delays in acquiring spare parts, longer repair times, and higher wages, which collectively contribute to the escalating insurance premiums.
The sustained rise in car insurance costs poses significant challenges for both insurers and policyholders. With premium rates reaching unprecedented heights, motorists are grappling with the financial strain of securing comprehensive insurance coverage for their vehicles.
