Smooth start for new Fleming Way bus interchange

Swindon’s brand-new Fleming Way bus interchange has been hailed a success after a smooth first month of operation.

The £33 million project was funded by the Government’s Future High Streets Fund (£25m), the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership’s Local Growth Fund (£3m), and Swindon Borough Council (£5m). It replaces the former bus station with a modern, accessible, and environmentally friendly facility.

The interchange now serves more than 30 local and regional bus routes, alongside a dedicated National Express pick-up and drop-off point. Bus shelters feature wireless phone charging, solar panels, and digital departure screens, while wider layouts ensure improved wheelchair access.

The transformation also includes a greener, more welcoming public space, with 186 trees and over 23,000 plants and bushes planted, plus new segregated cycle lanes connecting the town’s main cycling routes.

Andrew Sherrington, General Manager at Swindon’s Bus Company, said:
“Our transition to the new Fleming Way transport hub has been very successful. Services have run smoothly from the start, and both drivers and passengers are enjoying the efficiency and attractive new surroundings.”

Raj Chadha, Operations Manager at Stagecoach Swindon, added:
“The new interchange has improved accessibility, created a safer and more welcoming environment and made bus travel more convenient for everyone. Feedback from staff and passengers has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Councillor Chris Watts, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said:
“The successful opening of Fleming Way is the first step in improving the town centre. Attention will now turn to demolishing the old bus station and preparing the land for the next phase of regeneration.”
