Middleleaze just got a whole lot smokier – in the best possible way. Hickory’s Smokehouse, the much-anticipated Southern-style restaurant, officially opened its doors to the Swindon public this afternoon, Friday 23rd May, slightly ahead of schedule and to the delight of local foodies.
The Chester-based restaurant group, known for its deep-rooted passion for all things BBQ, has already made waves across the Midlands and North, but this new opening marks its first foray into Wiltshire. And by the looks of it, they’ve been welcomed with open arms and empty stomachs.
A True Taste of the South
From the moment guests step inside, it’s clear Hickory’s isn’t your average restaurant. Drawing inspiration from the heartlands of American BBQ, the interiors channel a rustic, deep South warmth – think cosy booths, sports screens, a neighbourhood bar feel, and all the Southern hospitality you’d expect.
General Manager Ajay Palmer, who hails from Swindon himself, described the launch as a proud moment. “We are beyond happy to be opening in Swindon,” he said. “I’ve been with Hickory’s for over seven years and to finally bring it to my hometown is incredibly special. The support we’ve had has been amazing.”
The team have clocked up over 25 road trips through Texas, Louisiana and the broader BBQ belt – all in the name of research. That experience is evident throughout the menu, with classics like Memphis-style ribs, Texas brisket, pulled pork and burgers all smoked “low ‘n’ slow” in genuine hickory wood smokers shipped over from the US.
More Than Just a Meal
Hickory’s Swindon isn’t just about food – it’s about creating an experience. There’s a Fro-Co (frozen custard) station for the kids, an outdoor play area, and a dedicated movie room. Adults, meanwhile, can enjoy a bourbon selection boasting over 25 varieties, alongside craft beers, cocktails and quirky desserts that are already causing a stir on social media.
Over 300 guests – from local charities to representatives of Swindon Town FC – were invited to the pre-opening evenings, and the feedback has been glowing.
Mark Everest, a well-known local butcher and BBQ enthusiast, said: “I recently got back from a trip to Texas where I visited some of the world’s best smokehouses – and Hickory’s is easily on par. It’s a brilliant addition to Swindon’s food scene.”
Ellie Lawrence from STEAM added, “The food was fantastic, the portions were huge, and my dad loved the live sport in the bar. We’re already looking forward to collaborating with the team on some of our future events.”
A Local Hotspot in the Making
With its mix of down-to-earth charm, authentic flavours and serious attention to detail, Hickory’s looks set to become a firm local favourite. If you’re heading over this weekend, don’t be surprised to find a queue – and if you’re smart, you’ll arrive hungry.
