As part of the ongoing Local Charity of the Week Scheme, attention is drawn to the remarkable efforts of the Rein and Shine Riding School team at Bury Hill Farm. A recent visit by Sir Robert Buckland MP shed light on their inspiring Changing Lives Through Horses programme.
Operated as a charity under the auspices of the British Horse Society, this alternative education initiative strives to re-establish communication among young people through the therapeutic interaction with horses.
The programme not only reignites the educational and training aspirations of the youth but also equips them with the necessary tools to carve a career path of their choosing.
Under the Changing Lives Through Horses (CLtH) umbrella, young people find reconnection to communities through the enchanting world of horses. This process rekindles their motivation for continued education and training while providing essential skills to pursue a career path aligned with their aspirations.
This alternative education initiative unfolds within equine settings approved by the British Horse Society, boasting qualified and experienced BHS Accredited Professional Coaches.
Tailored for individuals aged 5-25 with special needs, including those facing permanent exclusion or at risk of exclusion in a broader context, the programme also caters to those not in employment, education, or training (NEET). This inclusive approach extends to individuals at risk of social exclusion, grappling with income below the poverty line and lacking the skills to enhance their economic prospects.
The CLtH programme aligns with the National Curriculum at various key stages (KS1, KS2, KS3, and KS4), emphasising holistic development and nurturing six crucial life skills: building relationships, communication, confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and perseverance.
Focusing on child-centred success-based learning, the programme tailors its approach to the unique targets and needs of each young person. It provides an alternative provision pathway, forging close partnerships with schools, local authorities, and other referral agencies.
