Scouts from the Malmesbury area took charge in a unique event where they steered discussions on local issues at a simulated Town Council meeting.
The session, hosted at the Town Hall, saw the 1st King Athelstan troop engage in earnest debates under the guidance of Malmesbury Mayor Cllr Gavin Grant and Town Clerk Liz Cook.
In a display of civic responsibility and maturity, the young scouts adhered to the formalities of council proceedings, proposing and seconding resolutions, and addressing each other as ‘Councillor’. The agenda was set by the scouts themselves, focusing primarily on proposals for an outdoor skatepark and an all-weather pitch at Malmesbury School.
Cllr Grant commended the scouts for their articulate arguments and efficient management of time during the meetings. He emphasized the importance of listening to the youth’s aspirations for the town, promising to relay their concerns to fellow councillors and keep them informed about the progress.
The engagement with Malmesbury’s young citizens didn’t stop there. Cllr Grant also participated in a lively session with the 1st Malmesbury Brownies, discussing the charitable endeavors of his Mayoral term. Later, he attended the annual awards dinner of the Malmesbury Air Cadets, where guest speaker Dr. Roz Savage MBE shared her inspirational experiences of oceanic exploration.
Reflecting on the evening, Cllr Grant expressed admiration for the achievements of the local youth and highlighted Dr. Savage’s motivational message of self-discovery and resilience. The event underscored the potential and determination of Malmesbury’s younger generation to make a positive impact in their community.
