Science Museum to bring top space show to Swindon’s new Science Festival

To celebrate the end of World Space Week and to recognise Swindon as home of the UK Space Agency, the Science Museum have today revealed that they will be sending their top space shows and workshops to support “Tomorrow”, Swindon’s new science festival, to be held at STEAM museum in February,

The action-packed show, called Out of this World, will take visitors on a journey into space promising explosions, super-cool liquid nitrogen, eye-popping vacuums and even wee drinking!

Led by the nationally recognised Science Museum outreach team, visitors will discover what it takes to become an astronaut, launch a rocket, explore the Solar System and look for alien life.

“The Science Museum is the very best when it comes to science shows in the UK, and we’re incredibly excited that they’ve offered to support Swindon’s festival, for both days, even waiving their fees to make sure Swindon families can all enjoy the spectacle,” said Rod Hebden, Director of New Elements, who have partnered up with STEAM museum to create the science festival.

Alongside the show, the Science Museum outreach team will also bring their hands-on workshop for families, Over the Moon!

Families will get the chance to build their own tactile map of The Moon, and then see if their lander can make it to the surface as they make their own moon mission.

“It’s great to get the chance to help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers right here in Swindon,” explained Scott McKenzie-Cook, Cultural Events Manager for the Science Museum, based in London. “We obviously have a strong link to Swindon, and this is a chance to do something in the town, itself.  As it’s the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings this year, bringing our space show and workshop felt like the perfect way to support the festival.”

The science shows and workshops will take part alongside talks, debates and a hands-on ‘Discovery Zone’ featuring the latest research, with the UK Space Agency, top UK universities and local and national companies taking part.
