In his commitment to support local causes and organisations, Sir Robert Buckland has chosen Hospital Radio Swindon as his Local Charity of the Week.
This remarkable charity offers a free radio service tailored for the patients and dedicated staff at the Great Western Hospital, and it operates entirely through the dedication of volunteers. Sir Robert has had the privilege of being a guest of Hospital Radio Swindon, and he is delighted to shine a spotlight on their invaluable work.
The roots of Hospital Radio Swindon trace back to an astonishing journey that began in 1938 when a single gramophone was wheeled around the hospital wards, providing a touch of musical comfort to patients. It was a humble start, but it sowed the seeds of something beautiful.
In 1955, a pivotal moment occurred when a football commentary box was installed at the County Ground in Swindon. These commentaries were broadcast to Swindon Hospitals, marking a significant step forward. However, it was the vision of one of the commentators, Les Harris, that truly shaped the destiny of Hospital Radio Swindon. He proposed expanding the format to include broadcasting requests, music, and chat, all designed to uplift the spirits of patients during their hospital stays.
The Swindon Hospital Broadcasting Society came into existence in 1965, bringing Les Harris’s vision to life. Broadcasting officially commenced, and the airwaves of the hospital became a source of entertainment, solace, and connection for patients and staff alike.
In 2007, a new chapter began for Hospital Radio Swindon when it relocated to a state-of-the-art studio within the Great Western Hospital. This move marked a significant milestone, enhancing their capacity to serve the hospital community effectively. The studio, located on the second floor, now stands as a beacon of hope and entertainment.
In recognition of his influential role in bringing Hospital Radio Swindon into the Great Western Hospital, the studio was renamed the David Penfold Studio in 2013. This act of honouring a dedicated member speaks volumes about the close-knit and appreciative community that Hospital Radio Swindon has cultivated over the years.
