Residents shape future of Penhill through £20m Pride in Place programme

More than 40 residents gathered to help shape plans for Penhill as part of the Government-backed Pride in Place programme, which will see up to £20m invested in the neighbourhood over the next decade.

The first community conversation took place at The Meadows on Leigh Road, bringing together local people, community groups, partners and officers from Swindon Borough Council.

Community-led investment

Pride in Place is designed to put residents in the driving seat, supporting ideas and projects identified by the community rather than partner organisations.

The funding can support a wide range of priorities, including:

  • Improving local spaces

  • Strengthening connections between neighbours

  • Supporting volunteers and community groups

  • Initiatives that promote wellbeing and inclusion

Those attending shared ideas on building on Penhill’s strengths, creating more opportunities for people to come together and ensuring local voices remain central to decision-making. Many spoke about their pride in the area and their ambition to shape a positive future.

Decisions on how the funding is spent will be made locally through a resident-led neighbourhood board, chaired independently. While the funding will be held and administered by the Council, priorities will be set by the community.

Councillor Jim Grant, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships at Swindon Borough Council, described the £20m investment as a significant long-term commitment, emphasising that what matters most is that local people decide how it is used.

Walcot East event announced

Walcot East is also set to receive £20m through Pride in Place. A community conversation for residents in that neighbourhood will take place on Tuesday, 24 February, from 7pm to 8.30pm at Buckhurst Community Centre.

Residents who live or work in the area are encouraged to attend, share their views and find out how they can get involved.

Further engagement events and activities are being scheduled as part of the programme. More information about Pride in Place and upcoming opportunities to get involved is available via Let’s Talk Swindon.
