Repeat Shoplifter Handed Store Ban in Bid to Protect Swindon’s Retailers

Anyone who spends time around Swindon’s shops will know that petty theft has become an unwelcome part of the local landscape. But one familiar face will now find many doors firmly closed to him following the latest court result aimed at curbing repeat offending.

Michael McDonagh, 47, of Spring Close, has long been on the radar of local retailers and police officers alike. His latest appearance at Swindon Magistrates Court on Monday followed the theft of several items from the Co-op on Groundwell Road the previous day. He entered an early guilty plea.

The court sentenced McDonagh to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months, along with 25 rehabilitation activity days intended to address the issues behind his behaviour. However, it was the Criminal Behaviour Order that drew most attention. The two-year ban prevents him from entering any Co-op, B&M or Morrisons within Swindon’s boundaries – a move police hope will offer shop staff a little breathing space.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Ed Rogers explained that the order acts as both a shield for local businesses and a warning to McDonagh. “If he breaches the CBO, he is liable to be sent straight to prison,” he said. “But alongside that, the rehabilitation days give us and our partners the opportunity to support people dealing with challenges around mental health or substance misuse.”

This latest conviction forms part of Op Dasher, Wiltshire Police’s seasonal operation designed to keep Swindon town centre safer and more welcoming as the Christmas period draws in. Officers are increasing visibility, working closely with shops, and encouraging residents to speak up if they witness anything concerning.

“Please continue to report any concerns or incidents,” Sgt Rogers added. “Speak to officers out on patrol or ring 101. It all helps us keep the town safer.”
