Dorcan Leisure Centre’s summer ‘Holiday, Activity and Food’ (HAF) scheme has been hailed a tremendous success, with over 600 children aged 8-14 years taking part. Funded by the government, the programme provided free activities and healthy meals for children from low-income families, making this year the most successful to date.
The scheme, aimed at children who receive free school meals or whose families receive benefits, ensured at least four hours of daily activities over a minimum of four days. Alongside physical exercise, participants were provided with a nutritious lunch and taught the importance of healthy eating.
Children were able to take part in a variety of activities, from swimming and football to basketball, tennis, and even a dry inflatable assault course. In a first for the scheme, older children were also introduced to gym sessions under the supervision of a fitness instructor. Additionally, the programme catered for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including those with ADHD, autism, and anxiety, ensuring inclusivity for all.
Ashley Giles, General Manager at Dorcan Leisure Centre, expressed his delight: “This summer’s HAF scheme has been our biggest and best yet. It was fantastic to see so many young people making new friends, trying out sports for the first time, and enjoying a healthy meal each day. Knowing we’ve made a positive impact on local children’s lives is hugely rewarding.”
Parents were also full of praise for the initiative, with Samantha Worley, a local parent, saying: “My son Kaleb had an amazing time. The swimming lessons offered were a real bonus, as I simply can’t afford lessons for all my children, and swimming is such an essential life skill.”
With another successful summer behind them, Dorcan Leisure Centre is already looking ahead to next year’s HAF programme, aiming to build on this year’s achievements and continue to support young people in the community.
