Rare Amur Tiger Cubs Thriving at Longleat

Exciting news from Longleat Safari Park as keepers offer a glimpse into the development of four rare Amur tiger cubs born just a month ago. This adorable quartet has captured hearts worldwide, representing a significant addition to the conservation efforts for this critically endangered species.

Amur tigers, native to the far east of Russia, are among the most endangered animals globally, with a mere 450 individuals remaining in the wild. The birth of these cubs is not only a cause for celebration but also a vital contribution to the preservation of their species.

Mum Yana, with her experience from raising a previous litter in 2019, is proving to be an attentive parent. According to Carnivore Keeper Kayleigh Smith, Yana is now able to leave the cubs for short periods, allowing them to explore their surroundings under her watchful eye.

“It is really lovely to see their personalities starting to come through,” Kayleigh remarked, sharing insights into the cubs’ behaviours. “We’ve identified one which is an explorer who took their first steps early and was the first to climb over mum.”

The cubs’ rapid development is evident, with their eyes fully open and their senses awakening to the world around them. Caleb Hall, another keeper, highlighted their upcoming milestones, including transitioning to solid food and receiving their first vaccinations at eight weeks.

“Over the next couple of weeks, they will start to try solid food rather than just having Yana’s milk,” Caleb explained. “At 12 weeks, they will have their second vaccinations and will be able to wander outside, but it will be late summer before they can go into the main paddock.”

These majestic creatures, known as the largest of the big cats, faced near extinction in the 1930s due to rampant hunting and habitat destruction. Longleat’s successful breeding program plays a crucial role in safeguarding the future of Amur tigers, ensuring that future generations can marvel at their beauty and strength.

As these tiny cubs grow and thrive under Yana’s care, their journey symbolizes hope for the preservation of a species on the brink of extinction.
