As the days grow warmer and the promise of spring beckons, Swindon residents are being urged to step up for a cause that touches so many lives.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is making a return to town and is offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to take part in an event that funds crucial, life-saving research.

From Monday 17th March to Sunday 6th April, those looking to get involved can take advantage of a 30% discount on entry fees by using the code 30SPRING at sign-up.
With a variety of events on offer at Lydiard Park on Saturday 3rd May, there’s something for everyone. Whether it’s the fun-filled Pretty Muddy 5k, designed to test endurance with mud-splattered obstacles, or the Pretty Muddy Kids option for younger participants aged six to twelve, the event caters to all levels of fitness. Traditional 3k, 5k, and 10k races are also available, making it accessible to individuals, families, and friends looking to come together for a great cause.
Race for Life has been a fixture in the UK since 1994, with more than 10 million participants raising millions for cancer research. The funds generated from these events have helped scientists make vital breakthroughs, such as the development of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, expected to prevent nearly 90% of cervical cancers in the UK. Cancer Research UK has also played a pivotal role in advancements in radiotherapy and the creation of abiraterone, a drug extending the lives of men with advanced prostate cancer.
Sam Morris, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson in Swindon, is calling on the local community to get involved: “No matter how cancer has affected us, life is worth racing for. Sadly, nearly one in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime, but we can all play a role in funding research that will beat it.”
She continued: “Race for Life events are open to absolutely everyone – there’s no competition, no pressure, just the joy of taking part and raising money for an important cause. Whether you’re running in honour of a loved one, looking to challenge yourself, or simply want to have some fun while fundraising, now is the perfect time to sign up.”
The event is supported by headline sponsor Standard Life, part of Phoenix Group, who have reaffirmed their commitment to the cause. Andy Curran, Chief Executive of Standard Life, said: “We are incredibly proud to continue our sponsorship of Race for Life and help raise funds for life-saving research. By working together, we can move towards a future where people live longer, healthier lives, free from the fear of cancer.”
With an incredible atmosphere, a chance to get active, and the opportunity to make a difference, there has never been a better time to lace up those trainers and get involved.
