The increasing need for hospice care has prompted Prospect Hospice to join forces with over 140 hospices across England, Scotland, and Wales as part of the “This is Hospice Care” campaign. With UK death rates predicted to rise by 130,000 annually by 2040, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the vital role hospice care plays in supporting individuals with life-limiting conditions.
Locally, Prospect Hospice provides essential care for residents in Swindon and north east Wiltshire. As demand continues to grow, the organisation is calling on the community to consider supporting its services through gifts left in wills.
“By 2040, the number of annual deaths in the UK is expected to rise by 130,000, with 90% due to natural causes. If we don’t start planning now, the gap in hospice care could become very real,” said Carolyn Bell, Director of Patient Services at Prospect Hospice.
Hospices already face significant challenges, relying heavily on community support to sustain their services. Prospect Hospice is no exception and is looking to the public to help secure the future of its care provision.
“Gifts in wills already play a vital part in what we do,” explained Carolyn. “Last year alone, these generous legacies helped us provide compassionate care to over 250 patients and their families. But with future needs expected to rise, ongoing support will be crucial.”
Hospice care extends beyond medical treatment, offering emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients and their loved ones during life’s most challenging moments. As part of the national campaign, Prospect Hospice hopes to encourage conversations about the importance of planning ahead and leaving a lasting impact.
