Project Zero in Swindon: Over 200 Driving Offences Detected

Last week, Roads Policing Officers in Swindon were actively engaged in Project Zero, addressing more than 200 motoring offences in a targeted effort to enhance road safety.

As part of this initiative, RPU officers, supported by Speed Enforcement Officers, dedicated their attention to one town in the county every Wednesday. The focus was on identifying and addressing the “fatal five” offences that pose significant risks on the road:

  1. Driving while using a mobile phone
  2. Drink/drug driving
  3. Driving at excess speed
  4. Failing to wear a seatbelt
  5. Careless driving

On Wednesday of 13th December, RPU, in collaboration with Speed Enforcement Officers, successfully identified and handled 207 motoring offences. The majority of cases (180) involved drivers exceeding speed limits, with one instance capturing a driver reaching 62mph in a 40mph zone along Queens Drive.

Several vehicles were seized due to licence and insurance violations. Additionally, the Specials Road Safety Unit intercepted a vehicle engaged in an overtaking manoeuvre, clocking in at a staggering 69mph in a 30mph zone in Malmesbury.

A/Insp Will Ayres expressed concern over the alarming speeds observed, stating, “These are ridiculous speeds for these roads – the speed limit is there for a reason and should be adhered to at all times. At this time of year, the roads are busier than usual and driving in this manner is putting yourself and others at risk of serious injury or death.

“Our team will continue to cover the county targeting those individuals most likely to cause serious harm on our roads.”
