Proactive Policing Ensures Smooth Car Meet in Swindon

In a proactive move to mitigate potential disruptions, Operation Staysail, Wiltshire Police’s enforcement initiative aimed at managing car meets, took swift action to oversee a planned gathering in Swindon.

The operation involved officers from various units, including Roads Policing, evidence gathering vehicles, and public order, strategically stationed across different locations. Their presence sought to reassure the public and uphold the safety of both attendees and the community.

During the operation, officers conducted a thorough examination of half a dozen vehicles in collaboration with the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). As a result, one vehicle was prohibited due to safety concerns, while another, discovered to be using false plates, was seized. Additionally, one individual faced charges for driving without insurance.

Police also made one arrest for drug driving, with the suspect subsequently taken into custody for further questioning. Chief Superintendent Phil Staynings emphasised the dual responsibility of balancing the rights of genuine car enthusiasts with addressing the antisocial behavior that can disrupt local communities.

Chief Superintendent Phil Staynings commented, “As we have said previously, we recognise that genuine car enthusiasts meet lawfully and do so in a manner that doesn’t cause distress to local residents.”

He further asserted that Operation Staysail remains committed to ensuring minimal disruption to the public during car meets and will continue to address any offenses committed robustly.
