Poll Cards Being Delivered Ahead of May Elections in Swindon

Ahead of the upcoming Borough and Police and Crime Commissioner elections on Thursday, 2 May, Swindonians are poised to receive their crucial poll cards, detailing essential information about polling stations and photo ID requirements.

This year, poll cards will arrive in the form of an A5 card, serving as a vital reminder for registered voters. However, it’s imperative to note that the poll card itself cannot serve as an accepted form of identification.

On the reverse side, voters are advised about the flexibility of photo ID usage, explaining that even expired documents remain valid as long as they accurately represent the individual. It’s essential for the name on the ID to match the name used during the voter registration process, with only original documents being accepted.

For those lacking the accepted forms of photographic identification, provisions have been made to obtain a free Voter Authority Certificate. Residents can apply online or by contacting the Council to request an application form by post. Alternatively, applications can be made in person at the Civic Offices in Euclid Street during working hours, with submissions closing at 5pm on Wednesday, 24th April 2024.

Ensuring voter registration by 11.59pm on 16th April is crucial, with a quick and straightforward process available on the Government’s website. Additionally, individuals opting for postal votes must register by 5pm on 17th April 2024, while proxy vote applications must be submitted by 5pm on 24th April 2024.

Sam Mowbray, Swindon Borough Council’s Returning Officer, underscored the significance of voter readiness, stating, “With less than six weeks until the Borough and Police and Crime Commissioner elections, it’s vital that everyone intending to vote is registered and possesses suitable photo ID.

“The poll card offers detailed guidance on acceptable photo ID, along with instructions for obtaining a Voter Authority Certificate if needed. Let’s ensure a smooth voting process by applying for necessary certificates well before the deadline.”
