Police Reminder to Safeguard Your Vehicles Amidst Spate of Thefts

In response to a concerning increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles in the rural areas surrounding Swindon, police are issuing a timely reminder for residents to bolster their vehicle security measures.

Over the past few days, reports have flooded in detailing incidents of theft from cars left unlocked in villages such as Wroughton, Broad Hinton, and Winterbourne Bassett and PC Matthew Price has stressed the commonality in these cases, stating, “All the reports that have come in have resulted from vehicles left unsecured.”

While the villages may seem far removed from urban concerns, PC Matthew Price emphasises the necessity for residents to remain vigilant. He advises, “It may sound obvious, but please remember to lock your vehicles when you leave them, even for a second, and never leave any valuables or presents on display in your vehicles. You should also avoid leaving your car open and unattended, even briefly and on your own driveway.”

PC Matthew Price further outlines essential steps to enhance vehicle security, including parking in well-lit and open areas when out and about. For those with garages, utilising them for parking adds an extra layer of protection. Investing in a steering wheel lock is another recommended precautionary measure.

One cautionary note is regarding the rising threat of keyless thefts. PC Matthew Price warns of thieves utilising “relay theft,” a technique where digital devices intercept a car key fob’s signal and relay it to the vehicle, prompting it to unlock. To counter this, vehicle owners are encouraged to stay vigilant and adopt protective measures.
