A brand-new sports hub is set to bring top-class facilities and community spirit to Swindon’s Wichelstowe development. Plans for the Wichelstowe Sports Hub, which will sit between Middle and West Wichel, are now open for public consultation.
The proposed hub aims to provide spaces for a wide range of activities, from competitive sports to gentle exercise like walking along Wichelstowe’s scenic canals. With funding from Section 106 contributions—developer payments earmarked for community infrastructure—the project promises to deliver a brand new facility for residents of all ages.
The current plans include all-weather floodlit pitches, a pavilion with changing rooms, a car park, and play areas. The pavilion could also feature a café and a community space.
The project is a collaboration between Swindon Borough Council and Wroughton Parish Council, and early surveys have already assessed features such as trees, hedgerows, rivers, and wildlife, with the aim of preserving and enhancing natural habitats.
To the south of East Wichel Way, the hub will feature grass pitches and play facilities, while land to the east will undergo ecological improvements to offset the environmental impact. Plans also include improved footpaths and enhanced drainage to mitigate flood risks, with oversight from the Environment Agency.
Local residents and sports clubs are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposals via the Let’s Talk Swindon engagement website, with feedback being collected until mid-January. The input will guide the next stage of detailed design work, with further opportunities for public comment planned for the future.
Councillor Kevin Small, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, highlighted the importance of the project: “We are creating a modern, vibrant community in Wichelstowe through the joint venture with Barratt Developments and this sports hub is another great example of the excellent facilities that are being provided to benefit local residents. This development is delivering on our missions to build a better and fairer Swindon.
“It is really important that we provide spaces like this that everyone can enjoy and we’d really love to hear what local people think of our initial proposals so we can take on board their views as we get to the detailed design stage.”
Councillor John Hewer, Chair of Wroughton Parish Council, echoed this sentiment: “Wroughton Parish Council are excited to be involved in this project. There are already some very well subscribed and successful sports clubs in our parish and this new facility can only be a positive benefit for the local community.
“We strongly encourage all residents in the parish to formally respond to this consultation, as we really want and need to hear your views.”
