Swindon Town Centre could see a transformation in its telecommunications infrastructure as British Telecommunications (BT) proposes to replace its traditional phone boxes with state-of-the-art street hubs.
The move comes as part of BT’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its “payphone estate” and provide enhanced services to the community.
BT aims to replace the old phone boxes, which were introduced from 1985, with modern street hubs. These hubs will not only offer free phone calls, including to mobiles, and waterproof USB charging ports but will also feature illuminated advertising panels measuring 165cm in length on each of the 1.23m wide sides.
The street hubs are designed to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing continuous service to the public. Powered by 100 percent renewable carbon-free energy, the hubs will be closely monitored by BT around the clock. Weekly inspections and bi-weekly cleaning services will ensure their proper maintenance.
In terms of functionality, the hubs will be equipped with 5G connectivity, offering ultrafast WiFi to users. They will also provide device charging capabilities and free phone calls, making it convenient for people to stay connected while on the go. Moreover, the hubs will feature a direct 999 button, facilitating easy access to emergency services, thereby enhancing public safety.
This proposed transition from traditional phone boxes to modern street hubs demonstrates BT’s commitment to evolving with the changing needs of the community.
