Paralympian Footballer Mentors Swindon Students in AQA Unlocking Potential Programme

Former Team GB Paralympic footballer Jack Rutter has praised the efforts of students from Highworth Warneford School, who recently took part in a national scheme aimed at empowering young people to make a positive difference in their local communities.

The AQA Unlocking Potential Programme, which encourages students to cultivate new skills and tackle issues within their school or local area, saw the year 8 students – who were nominated by their teachers – among just one hundred and twenty individuals selected to take part nationwide.

Former Team GB Paralympics football captain Jack Rutter took on the role of mentor, guiding the students as they organised and executed a social action project at Southfield Junior School in Swindon.

The event focused on promoting mental well-being and confidence showcasing the transformative power of sport and music in fostering a positive mindset.

Team GB Paralympian Jack Rutter said: “It has been brilliant to see the students use the skills they have been developing on the programme to deliver a superb social action project which raises vital awareness on how sport and music can help improve wellbeing. I am really proud of them!”

The event, which took place on May 21st, featured sessions in rugby and football, along with an outdoor musical performance by a student rock band. Reflecting on their experience, students Charlie and Casey shared their enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its impact on mental health and wellbeing.

Highworth Warneford School Headteacher Andy Steele commended the students for their initiative and dedication, saying “The event was really enjoyable and pupils from both schools had a great time.

“Our thanks must go to Jack Rutter who is an amazing mentor and role model. His amazing journey has been an inspiration to all the students. It has been a fantastic opportunity for them, and they have risen to the challenge and been great ambassadors for the school.”
