No substantial meal needed for drinkers if watching a gig

As Swindon moves into Tier 2 lockdown from midnight, the Government has issued updated guidance for live event venues including grassroot music venues, cinemas and theatres.

Pubs and bars are permitted to open providing they are operating as a restaurant and serve a ‘substantial meal’ alongside alcohol however if the venue is hosting a ticketed screening or performance ‘alcohol can be ordered at a bar to be consumed when seated in the auditorium or area.’

It was initially thought that entertainment venues were not permitted to sell alcohol as they cannot provide a substantial meal as per the government’s initial ruling but this has now been updated.

Mark Dayvd, CEO of Music Venue Trust, a UK Registered Charity which acts to protect, secure and improve UK Grassroots Music Venues for the benefit of venues, communities and upcoming artists, said: “Music Venue Trust alongside Live Music Industry Venues and Entertainment Group (LIVE) has worked hard with the government to make the case that the consumption of culture and the consumption of food should be treated equally.

“If music be the food of love play on! We are delighted that we have been listened to and that guidance has been issued that makes it clear that ticketed events at grassroots music venues can go ahead in Tier 2 with alcohol on sale.

“It makes a direct difference to the number of shows that can be delivered and is a significant step forward in the campaign to Revive Live Music and Reopen Every Venue Safely.”
